MADE IN CHINA
ONLINE EXHIBITION
Made in China is a confrontation between Made in Amdo, through the example of the multi-culturalism of the Tibetan eponym region and Made in Weibo, symbol of the all-mighty Han culture and its digital and urban hyperconnection.
Made in Amdo
This first part of the exhibition deals with the cultural and spiritual diversity of Amdo (Eastern Tibet) through photographs and an installation entitled There will be followers. The Chinese flag is distorted and frozen in motion using a resin. The red colour of the flag is reconstituted from footprints of military boots. The title is a nod to the film There will be followers (⾃ 有 后来 ⼈), directed by Toshiya Fujita, made in 1963.
Le désanchantement du monde
Leading to the second part of the exhibition, the staircase served as a support for a second installation named "Le désenchantement du monde" (The disenchantment of the world). The installation consists of a branch where float some prayer flags which leads to a tree with an ex-voto, placed on the ground floor. The title refers to the works of Max Weber, and more specifically to the Sociology of Religions (1910-1920).
Made in Weibo
Thanks to the photographs and a third installation titled Maître chat ou le Chat botté ("Puss in Boots" or "Master Cat, or The Booted Cat"), this part of the exhibition focuses on the acculturation phenomenom in contemporary China.
Distributed by Chinese and Japanese shops all around the world, the lucky cat, zhao cai mao or maneki-neko, represents both the welcome and the fortune. It is present throughout the world in front of shops and restaurants. The installation takes the form of a painted base of the same red as the installation There will be followers on which are placed 55 cats facing a cat which is superior in size and weight.
